We decided to sign Ethan up for softball this winter season at the local park here in Carlsbad. He's been really interested in baseball for as long as I can remember and this was really my way of getting him into a sport of his own choosing. And playing softball has been in the making for a couple of months since I got him a foam bat and let him practice hitting the ball with it. We were both excited to go to softball practice for the first time.
It went seemingly well the first week, he was really excited about getting to play baseball. He also did really well hitting the ball, both from the tee and the pitching machine. He struggled a little bit with catching the ball with his baseball mitt, but he's three so I didn't expect much. All in all it was a good day and he was excited to come again.
The next practice didn't go as well…the photos you see here are a clear misrepresentation of what went on that day. He refused to run the base and wouldn't leave my side, but gained enough interest during the tee ball part but quickly walked off the field to the neighboring playground. I understand that he is three years old and does not have a long attention span, but I've battled whether or not I should let him continue the sport or wait until he gets a bit older. I think that he has quite a gift for throwing and want to harness that gift. But I also don't want to force him into doing what he doesn't want to do. For now we will finish off the rest of the season and see how it is…a "season" is only 8 weeks anyways, but I guess that's like 72 weeks in a three year old's mind.
